Nickey Barclay contact!

I received a very short e-mail not very long ago.  It simply said this: "If you still seek information on (Nickey Barclay), reply to this letter."  Well, I did and sure enough, it was Nickey sending the e-mail!  I will share with you a few things from her that are of interest to us die-hard Fanny fans and not breach a promise of privacy to her.  So please don't ask for her e-mail, I cannot and will not give it out.

This statement from her sums it up nicely:
"I'm in no way ashamed of my REAL contribution to Fanny.  It was a very, very hot band."
I know we all agree with you Nickey!

"Richard Perry had an enormous and terminally brainless English Sheepdog named Desmond, who once defecated in Alice's (pretty sure it was hers) bass drum at Village Recorder."

"On 'Mother's Pride' track 'Regular Guy', the "drums" were created by Alice playing with brushes on one of the cardboard boxes used to store the 2" master recording tapes.  On the same album, Alice prepared for the 'Solid  Gold' vocal by getting very, very drunk."

"While touring the American mid-west, Fanny were booked at a Chicago Loop nightclub called The Brown Shoe on the same night The Who were booked at the Auditorium Theatre.  Both bands being close friends, and Fanny being booked for a late-night show, it came to pass that Alice and Keith Moon had a bit of a mad jam during the Fanny gig, to the delight and bemusement of the audience."

Fair is Fair: a word or two from Alice de Buhr

"The Rhino Handmade Fanny Box Set ("The First Time In A Long Time" is tentatively somewhere in the title) is scheduled to be released on September 6th, and June, Jean and I have been allowed to give some input on song selection, etc. other than the first four albums. It really is quite a nice project, and I'm excited at the opportunity to let Fanny be heard by a whole new generation of ears not stuck in the sexual politics of the 70's."

Agreed, Alice!

"I tell you, the politics of this band are reaching out from 30 years past... Nickey's pretty right on in her opinion there.  We were a hot band, and if we'd been allowed to just play our music, maybe we'd have survived."

"I don't remember Desmond "pooping" in my bass drum, but I wouldn't put it past him.  Richard spoiled the dog rotten, and he was a royal pain.... (that goes for the dog, too! - bahda bing!).  Although we didn't jam, Keith Moon did sit in on a few Fanny songs at the Brown Shoe, but was so drunk we had to ask him to stop.  He couldn't keep the beat!"

Image and comment from Jim Frye

"I was one of the lucky ones who saw Fanny perform live. It was at a venue called The Frolics at Salisbury Beach, Massachusetts in 1972. Fanny was scheduled to play two nights, but something happened and they cancelled the first show ( maybe their tour bus broke down or something). The Frolics management had everyone come back the next night for the second show, the place was packed, and Fanny performed two sets, no warm-up act! "

I'm totally jealous Jim, as I never got the chance to see Fanny live in the 70's, so I love your pictures and story!  Thanks for sharing mate!  :)
